HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE NORTH BAY: 40 YEARS OF HELPING ANIMALS

For 40 years, the Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has been a lifeline for animals and the people who love them in Solano County. From our Vallejo shelter, we provide safe haven, compassionate care, medical support, adoption services, and pathways to loving homes for dogs and cats in need. We also work closely with community and rescue partners to give animals the best possible chance at a healthy, happy future.

ANIMAL SHELTERING HAS CHANGED — AND OUR SHELTER NEEDS TO CHANGE WITH IT

Sheltering today looks very different than it did when our facility was built. Animals coming into shelters may have more complex medical or behavioral needs, and some remain in our care much longer while waiting for the right home. A kennel designed for a short stay can become an animal's living space for weeks or even months.

That means appropriate, comfortable spaces for rest, enrichment, exercise, recovery, and human interaction aren't luxuries — they're essential to an animal's physical and emotional well-being.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS — WITH A MUCH-NEEDED GLOW UP

2026 marks HSNB's 40th anniversary serving the animals of Solano County. We're incredibly proud of that history, but four decades of service have taken a toll on our shelter. Years of deferred maintenance combined with changing standards for animal care mean our facility is in critical need of a glow up.

We need to repair and refresh aging areas of the shelter while modernizing the spaces where our animals spend their days. Our goal isn't to build something fancy — it's to create a safer, healthier, more comfortable environment that reflects what we now know animals need to thrive while they're waiting for home.

OUR COMMUNITY KEEPS OUR DOORS OPEN

One of the most important things to know about HSNB is that we are independently funded. We receive a small monthly stipend from the City of Vallejo, but we receive no financial support from any national humane society or animal welfare organization.

Approximately 80% of our operating budget must be raised through community fundraising.

That means HSNB exists because people in our community decide that these animals matter. Every donation through Live Solano Give Solano helps us care for the animals who need us today while building a better shelter for the animals who will need us tomorrow.
