The BIRMINGHAM PLEDGE FOUNDATION is a grassroots effort to recognize the dignity and worth of every individual, by making a personal, daily commitment to remove prejudice from our own lives and to treat all people with respect. Make a difference in your community! Sign The Pledge!

The purpose of the Birmingham Pledge Foundation is to develop and present programs for both youth and adults that promote the values expressed in the Birmingham Pledge:

I believe that every person has worth as an individual.

I believe that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of race or color.

I believe that every thought and every act of racial prejudice is harmful.  If it is my thought or act, it is harmful to me as well as to others.

Therefore, from this day forward I will strive daily to eliminate racial prejudice from my thoughts and actions.

I will discourage racial prejudice by others at every opportunity.

I will treat all people with dignity and respect, and I will strive daily to honor this pledge, knowing that the world will be a better place because of my efforts.

While especially concerned with issues of race and ethnicity, our programming principles include:   --  "I believe that every person has worth as an individual."   --  "Every issue counts."   --  "Nothing about me without me."   ....

Over 120,000 individual signers are listed in our online signature database, and many more have participated in local school and community Birmingham Pledge programs.  The Birmingham Pledge has been featured in "Teaching Tolerance" and over 3,000 copies of our Teachers Guide CD have been distributed.

The Birmingham Pledge has been used in support of programs in all fifty states and in over twenty countries.
