Diabetes Youth Services

Diabetes Youth Services (DYS) is an independent nonprofit organization based in Toledo, Ohio, dedicated to connecting families, educating communities, and supporting children and young people living with type 1 diabetes. Serving families throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, DYS provides practical diabetes education, peer connection, and year-round support to help youth live healthy, confident, and independent lives.

• School support and diabetes education: DYS provides training for schools, daycares, coaches, after-school programs, and other youth-serving organizations so staff can confidently support children with diabetes during the day. Education is customized to each setting and focuses on safety, daily diabetes management, and practical response skills.
• Family programs and community connection: DYS offers year-round family activities that bring together children, parents, caregivers, and siblings who understand the day-to-day challenges of type 1 diabetes. These programs create opportunities for families to learn from one another, reduce isolation, and build a supportive community.
• Hot Shots Camp programs: DYS camps give children and young adults with diabetes a safe, encouraging environment to build independence, practice diabetes-management skills, and enjoy camp activities alongside peers who share similar experiences. Camps are staffed with experienced diabetes educators, medical professionals, volunteers, and mentors.
• Resources and support for caregivers: DYS helps families, extended family members, and caregivers better understand type 1 diabetes through education, guidance, and access to local support networks.

Through its programs, DYS works to ensure that children with diabetes are supported not only at home, but also at school, in recreation, and throughout the broader community. Many programs are offered at low cost or free of charge, with local fundraising and community support helping make services accessible to families.
