Exhale to Inhale

A nonprofit organization

Exhale to Inhale empowers survivors of domestic and sexual violence to reclaim their lives through the healing practice of trauma-informed yoga. Rooted in choice, safety, and simplicity, Exhale to Inhale classes support survivors in reconnecting with their bodies, building strength, and cultivating agency—skills that extend far beyond the mat and into everyday life.

In Brooklyn, Exhale to Inhale partners with organizations including the North Brooklyn Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center’s Family, Community & Beyond Program, Art Transforms, Inc., BK College Immigrant Success Office, the Brooklyn Family Justice Center, Bonded By Baby, WomanKind, Community Mediation Services, Youth Action Services, the Shorefront YM-YWHA of Brighton-Manhattan Beach, and Sakhi for South Asian Women to offer weekly trauma-informed yoga classes for survivors.

In addition, the organization provides a 16-Hour trauma-informed yoga teacher training, as well as continuing education and self-care workshops. Through this integrated approach, Exhale to Inhale is building a more compassionate, trauma-informed world—one breath at a time.

Who We Are

Exhale to Inhale empowers those affected by domestic violence and sexual violence to transform their lives. ETI uses the healing practice of trauma informed yoga to empower survivors, while helping communities to develop skills and knowledge to support them. Through weekly trauma-informed yoga classes founded in choice making, safety, and simplicity, the ETI style of yoga offers far-reaching benefits that carry over off of the mat into everyday life. It is a means for survivors to feel strong, to begin to practice making choices, to connect to how certain shapes make them feel, express when something doesn’t feel right to them, and figure out what would work better. Classes take place in domestic violence shelters and community centers throughout New York, Connecticut, and Los Angeles. ETI is also focused on sustaining and caring for the staff and volunteers who work in this field and offer separate classes for the employees in these facilities. In addition, ETI provides trauma-informed teacher training for certified yoga teachers and continuing education and self-care workshops for our team of volunteer teachers.
