Girls on the Run Bexar County

A nonprofit organization

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

The Bexar County council began in 2010 when a group of women with a passion for running and an even bigger passion for empowering girls came together with a mission to bring Girls on the Run to San Antonio. For our first season, Spring 2011 at Hawthorne Academy, we hoped to attract 8 girls to help us begin. We were happily overwhelmed with 36 young women. Our council now serves over 1,000 girls each academic year in Bexar, Comal, and Kendall counties.

In fact, 2024-2025 was a record year for us--we served 1,030 girls on 80 teams! We never turn a girl away based on financial need--every girl who needs a scholarship receives one. Last year, 712 girls (69%) benefitted from full or partial scholarships.

We believe every girl deserves a place to grow, connect, and shine. Our curriculum blends physical activity with social-emotional skill development that enables girls to manage whatever comes their way. The strategies girls learn at Girls on the Run are sure to help them now and intended to help them for a lifetime. Help us reach those kids who need us the most.

Who We Are

Girls on the Run Bexar County (GOTRBC) teaches girls life skills--managing emotions, resolving conflict, developing empathy, and more--through a curriculum that incorporates physical activity and running. Through our proven curriculum, we provide girls with tools to make healthy life choices, teaching them to be confident and to persevere in the face of adversity. GOTRBC began in 2010 with 2 teams serving 36 girls. Now, in 2020, GOTRBC has grown to serving nearly 1,000 girls annually.

GOTRBC is an after school program for girls in 3rd-8th grade and generally facilitated at schools. The program runs 10 weeks and coincides with the school semesters; we have a fall and spring season.

The cost of the program is $150, but we never turn a girl away based on financial need. We offer scholarships for any girl who is not able to pay. The curriculum is administered by Volunteer Coaches who are trained to deliver our experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.

Your donations help us to provide scholarships to girls and pay for coach training and support as well as program materials.
