Our History
In 1966, a passionate group of residents came together to preserve the rich history of Helotes by founding the Helotes Historical Society. This important initiative was led by two visionary women: Lucy Perkins Brown, the editor of the town's beloved newspaper, The Helotes Echo, and Wanda Terry, the owner of the iconic Hickory Hut Restaurant in Old Town Helotes. In 2010, we transformed our mission by adopting a new name—the Historical Society of Helotes—and secured 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. This revitalization not only honors the commitment of Lucy and Wanda but also strengthens our foundation, empowering us to inspire future generations through our work.
Our Activities
Many buildings, photographs, and memories line the streets of Helotes and stand as a living testament to the pioneers, families, and visionaries whose dreams built the town we cherish today. The Historical Society of Helotes is dedicated to safeguarding this legacy through rigorous research, providing free access to online archives of the Helotes Echo newspapers, hosting engaging history exhibitions, organizing enlightening educational meetings and tours, and laying the groundwork for a future museum in Old Town Helotes.
Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the Historical Society of Helotes during “The Big Give.” These funds will support ongoing projects and the expansion of our educational initiatives—ensuring that Helotes’ story continues to be told with accuracy, passion, and pride.
