Lexington Montessori School

Lexington Montessori School (LMS) is a small school with a big heart! We cherish the opportunity to help children realize their full potential, allowing each to develop as a complete person. We nurture a diverse school family of up to 70 students each year from 2.5-12 years of age. Our students and staff are from a wide range of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, which enriches our growing understanding of the world and our roles within it. LMS maintains a student teacher ratio of 12:1 or better, and we provide art, music, and Spanish lessons. This multifaceted base of educational experience at LMS helps each child develop the self-reliance, self-image, and personal responsibility needed to create the peaceful world Maria Montessori envisioned.

We believe that family involvement in education is a foundational piece of student success, so we make special efforts to engage families. Throughout the school year, we have school wide family events, as well as parent education nights when we teach parents not only about the Montessori method, but also about community resources available to them and their children. An Executive Board comprised mostly of parents advises LMS to ensure that our work remains attuned to those we serve.

Service learning is another important aspect of the education we provide. All of our students—even our youngest primary students—participate in community service. During the 2023-24 school year, this included monthly visits to a local retirement community, monthly volunteering at the new God’s Pantry warehouse, as well as organizing a donation drive and crafting blankets for children in foster care. By the end of the year, we had collectively worked 345 community service hours. This coming year, we are excited to expand our service learning projects to a local animal shelter and a flower farm! To contextualize these efforts for students, we provide lessons on basic human needs, community leadership and action, poverty awareness, and hunger.

Finally, we work to avoid raising tuition whenever possible. Many families in Kentucky do not necessarily have the means to afford more expensive Montessori schools, but they still feel that their child’s educational and developmental needs can best be met through the Montessori method. We are proud to be one of the most affordable Montessori schools in our city, and we value economic diversity so that students are exposed to a range of life experiences and perspectives. Donations help us remain financially accessible to a broad range of families.
