LGBTQ Senior Housing’s mission is to facilitate access to welcoming, safe and affordable housing for low-income LGBTQ seniors, including through a formal role in the development of such housing; to define onsite housing services and programming that addresses the needs of LGBTQ seniors; and to support community space to serve seniors in the Greater Boston community.

In 2024, we made history with the opening of The Pryde at the former Rogers Middle School in the heart of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. This is the first -- and still only! -- LGBTQ-welcoming affordable senior housing in New England. At a time when older adults are the fastest growing group of the newly unhoused and too many LGBTQ older adults are forced back into the closet in senior communities, our work addresses the critical need for welcoming and affordable housing for our LGBTQ elders, as well as programs and services that embrace and celebrate LGBTQ older adults as their full authentic selves.

The Pryde provides 74 income-restricted apartments in a vibrant, diverse, and engaging environment. Located in the school's former gym, the beautiful and accessible Pryde Community Center is an integral part of the campus, hosting a wide range of programs and services for Pryde residents, the Hyde Park community, and the LGBTQ+ community of greater Boston.  Our model of income-restricted senior housing with an integrated public community center has proven to not only enhance the health and wellbeing of residents, but it also strengthens and supports the many marginalized communities we serve. Boston is one of the few major cities in the country without an LGBTQ+ community center and in this time of increasing backlash, we have stepped up to help fill the gap by making our event and meeting space available at low or no cost to the LGBTQ community.

We continue to expand critical programs and services at The Pryde and The Pryde Community Center while we continue to explore other development opportunities and advocate for our model and for making other senior communities LGBTQ-welcoming and affirming, as we believe that all senior housing should be welcoming and safe for our LGBTQ elders.
