Neighborhood Work Play Kids Theatre

A nonprofit organization

Neighborhood Work Play Kids Theatre (NWPKT) empowers elementary school students in Brooklyn and Sierra Leone by enhancing academic skills, fostering artistic expression, and providing cross-cultural learning experiences. Founded in 1995 by retired NYC teacher Cecilia John, NWPKT addresses the learning gaps in public schools, where rushed schedules and rigid curriculums often hinder student success. In 2024, only 32% and 36% of K-2nd grade students in New York City scored above the national average in reading and math respectively. NWPKT will have a 2026 summer camp in July and August for K-5 students, enhancing reading, writing, and math skills through creative, innovative methodologies. Programs like Math in the Garden, Readers Theater, and Cooking Culture offer alternative, connective approaches to challenging subjects. NWPKT aims to increase young people's academic success, empower them to creatively solve problems, and to thrive in an interconnected, global world.
