For those living in Amangwe Tribal Area with a vulnerability or life-limiting condition, Thembalethu's home and community care is a key resource for accessing health education, care and support. 

In rural South Africa, many children and adults suffer unnecessarily because of a lack of access to resources, health education and support. 

Without support, many children and adults living with serious illness and disabilities would not be able to fully participate in community life, nor reach to their full potential. Children with disabilities are often excluded from school, and without access to supports we take for granted, often live into only a fraction of their God-given potential. Instead of accessing available therapies, children with disabilities might never learn to walk, speak, or access hearing aids that exclude them from participation in their families and communities. 

Here’s what we’re doing to tackle these challenges: 

1. We provide health education, including information that many disabilities can be supported and mitigated with access to appropriate support. 
2. We educate families about rehabilitation services available, refer and provide assistance to families to access the special needs services available. 
3. We assist with transport money to access services or transport them up with our vehicles to the services. 
4. We provide HIV education, TB screening and referrals for testing. 
5. We provide weekly care at their homes to support and encourage them to do their exercises, and continue to attend their appointments and address any barriers to care.
