Zealous Empowering Nurturer

Zealous Empowering Nurturer, Inc. (ZEN) is a Charlotte-based nonprofit working to ensure that every family has access to fresh, nutritious food regardless of their income, neighborhood, or access to transportation.

Through community gardening, food distribution, nutrition education, and hands-on learning, ZEN addresses food insecurity while helping children, families, and seniors build healthier relationships with food. Our programs are designed not only to provide immediate support, but also to create long-term opportunities for education, self-sufficiency, and healthier living.

This year, our Give 8/28 Campaign is focused on helping ZEN take our mission on the road through the completion and expansion of our Mobile Market Truck.

Through our Mobile Market & Pop-Up Pantry, ZEN currently distributes fresh produce, pantry staples, nutritious meal kits, recipes, and food education to families facing food insecurity. However, transportation remains one of the greatest barriers preventing families from accessing healthy food. A fully outfitted Mobile Market Truck will allow us to bring these resources directly into neighborhoods, schools, senior communities, community events, and other areas where access is limited.

The Mobile Market Truck will help ZEN:

• Reach more families throughout the Charlotte community
• Transport and safely store fresh produce and refrigerated foods
• Distribute nutritious meal kits and pantry staples
• Offer mobile cooking demonstrations and food education
• Respond more efficiently to communities experiencing food insecurity
• Reduce transportation barriers for individuals and families in need

The truck will expand the reach of ZEN’s entire network of programs.

ZEN’s Garden For The Community is our 1.8-acre educational edible landscape where community members learn to grow food, connect with nature, volunteer, and help harvest fresh produce for families in need.

Empower Our Youth introduces children to gardening, nutrition, entrepreneurship, and healthy food preparation through school gardens, grow towers, and hands-on educational experiences.

Food 101 provides cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, grocery education, and practical resources that help individuals and families confidently prepare healthier meals.

Lula’s Garden Club creates opportunities for older adults to remain active, socially connected, and engaged through gardening, education, and intergenerational learning.

Together, these programs create a pathway from growing food to distributing it, teaching people how to prepare it, and empowering communities to make healthy choices. The Mobile Market Truck will connect every part of that pathway and allow ZEN to serve more people where they live, learn, work, and gather.
