What is BLACK YARN? Yarn is a colloquial term for storytelling, and Black Yarn refers to weaving together untold Black stories locally, nationally, and internationally. Through the power of collaboration, we aim to repair systemic harms, foster equity, and connect Black experiences with those of all Americans through film, research, & collaboration.

Our Philosophy: Our Story Is Your Story Too. We believe the unifying thread of storytelling invigorates a shared commitment to equity, building a legacy that benefits all.

In just two years, Black Yarn has grown from an idea into a movement, producing our first feature documentary, Lexington: Resilience in the Redline, working with the Lexington Clerks office to catalog the cities racially restrictive deeds, launching original research with Regina Lewis and others at the University of Kentucky, and building a vibrant network of donors, scholars, and community partners.

As we move into 2026, we’re focused on expanding our storytelling through national screenings, podcast development, and our next film exploring equity in education or healthcare. We aim to deepen our research, strengthen community collaboration, and secure sustainable funding to continue confronting the legacy of racial injustice through storytelling, research, and action.
