FVPS, The Battered Women and Children's Shelter

A nonprofit organization

Who We Are

Family Violence Prevention Services (FVPS) has served over 8,000 victims of domestic violence annually, primarily women and children. Our mission is to break the cycle of violence and to strengthen families by providing the necessary tools for self-sufficiency through delivery of emergency shelter, transitional housing, education, effective parenting education, and specialized intervention with youth and the elderly.

Nationally, 1 out of 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. In Texas, it is 1 out of 3 – nearly 38% of women. Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.

Victims stay in abusive relationships for many reasons: fear; lack of awareness of what constitutes abuse; poverty (lack of housing options, lack of transportation, inability to afford legal services); and barriers linked to poor mental and physical health. FVPS provides a comprehensive range of services that address these issues and foster long-term stability and freedom from violence.
