Our Mission is: "to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting youth, individuals, and families by providing excellent community services to overcome economic poverty". Guided by our mission, our Vision has evolved over the years - we "Empower Communities To Thrive".
Founded by the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas in 1951 to serve a community known then as the "Death Triangle", Good Samaritan’s early focus was to improve the health and education outcomes of this West Side neighborhood. Today, we still focus on our neighbors' health and educational needs with specialized programs that serve infants, children, parents, and families. Our accredited and nationally recognized core programs and services are provided by our two departments, Youth and Teen Services and Family Services. We create value for our neighbors and the stakeholders that fund our services because we are community-based, serve community-driven needs, and focus on outcomes that increase access to economic stability.
Our "home" of 74 years is supported by the Diocese and other partners, including local foundations, corporations, churches, and individuals. Our other partnerships with the city, state, the United Way, and other entities also focus on programs and services that alleviate health and educational inequity. This past year, we provided comprehensive services to more than 3,500 individuals and 1,100 families in San Antonio and South Texas.
Thank you for all you do to lift our community!
The mission of Good Samaritan Community Services is to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting youth, individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome economic poverty.
The Good Samaritan Center was established in 1951 by the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, under the leadership of Bishop Everett Jones. It began as a downtown mission of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
Since then, GSCS has grown to become a private, nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization and United Way agency that provides comprehensive services to more than 5,500 individuals and 1,800 families in San Antonio and South Texas. GSCS actively serves as a place of change, empowering thousands of people working to improve their lives and to overcome the challenges of poverty.
