H.I.S. Centre

A nonprofit organization

At The Centre, we believe the future of healthcare depends on equipping the next generation with hands-on experience. Every year, students eager to serve in medicine come through our doors—full of passion, but without real-world opportunities to apply what they’ve learned.

That’s where The Centre steps in. Through our internship program, students gain life-changing exposure to cutting-edge medical training, direct mentorship from our experienced instructors, and opportunities to serve vulnerable populations through our outreach. These interns not only sharpen their clinical skills but also discover the heart of medicine: compassion in action.

By sponsoring an intern during The Big Give, you’re helping to shape tomorrow’s healthcare leaders while expanding the impact of The Centre today. Your gift makes it possible for these students to train, learn, and give back—one patient, one community, and one future at a time.

Who We Are

Once part of Bulverde Spring Branch Emergency Services, d.b.a. BSB Fire & EMS, the remarkable successes of our enhanced community outreach programs and our emergency health sciences educational arm necessitated a transformation of the founding emergency services non-profit. At the H.I.S. Centre (Healthcare, Innovation, Sciences), we are focused on our shared passions: compassionate care, expanding our knowledge through education and research, and embracing groundbreaking methods and techniques.

We engage our passions through the following core areas:

• Centre for Emergency Health Sciences – Over 12,000 first responders, high school students, teachers, doctors, UTHSCSA Physician Assistants, and many other organizations passed through our halls to learn and hone their skills in our cadaver lab and other class offerings.
• Community Healthcare Program – This program seeks to expand access to care in our communities, embrace a prevention-driven approach to health, and offer health knowledge to shape stronger individuals. The needs of 411 unique patients were addressed in 2018 via the program, along with an economic benefit to taxpayers as one of the positive outcomes of serving these citizens.
• Wellness on Wheels (W.O.W.) – The W.O.W. is a one-of-a-kind medical unit built with three exam rooms and three workstations, hot and cold running water, and an air system that turns over 20 times per hour, which is critical in a clinical setting. Generous grant funding from the McKenna Foundation made the W.O.W. a reality for us.
• J-Crew – An eye opening, hands-on learning experience that provides the opportunity for the youth of our community, part of Explorer Troop 1700, to see the daily life of EMTs/Firefighters and law enforcement officers.

The H.I.S. Centre focuses on a prevention-driven approach to health and takes an active role in increasing experiential learning and research opportunities for continuing education and the future of medicine. We work hard to translate our visions into observable, concrete changes — and ultimately healthier and happier neighborhoods.
