The Story of How Marafiki Center Began

In the summer of 2019, brothers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cubaka and Elisha Mutayongwa, saw a need that couldn't be ignored: young African children in Kentucky were rapidly losing connection to their heritage. Youth struggled to maintain their language, identity, and sense of belonging while navigating integration into American culture. Determined to provide affirmation and support, they launched the first Summer Swahili Camp, a vibrant space where children could learn, play, and proudly celebrate their African roots.

What began as a grassroots camp quickly grew into a movement. Inspired by the joy and confidence they saw in the children, the brothers expanded their efforts. They introduced the AfroLex Conference, bringing together African youth for honest conversations about identity, leadership, and civic engagement. These early initiatives laid the foundation for what would become the Marafiki Center—a dynamic, community-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering Kentucky's African, refugee, and immigrant communities.

Today, the Summer Swahili Camp remains a cornerstone of Marafiki’s work, offering hundreds of children each year a powerful, affirming experience that strengthens cultural identity, builds friendships, and bridges generations. Alongside it, signature programs like the Swahili Day Festival, Shule Fest back-to-school resource fair, and the AfroLex Conference continue to foster community pride and civic participation.

With year-round programs such as Parent Engagement Workshops, Youth AfroLex Clubs in schools, and community resource connections, Marafiki Center is creating impact—making Lexington a more inclusive and welcoming city for all.

With the support of donors like you, Marafiki Center can sustain its programs that shape futures and build up the next generation of bold change makers.
