Tri-City Meals On Wheels was established in 1970 to meet the needs of the elderly and disadvantaged of our community. The aged, convalescent and handicapped often suffer from poor nutrition due to their inability to prepare adequate meals for themselves. The mission of Tri-City Meals On Wheels is to provide nutritious, home cooked meals delivered directly to those in need. We serve young and old - anyone who needs meals who lives within our delivery area.
Tri-City Meals on Wheels, a non-profit organization, is fifty-six (56) years old. What started out in the kitchen in a local to church to now serving those in need from a building built on a ninety-nine (99) year leased plot of ground ($1.00/year) in the borough of Southwest Greensburg, Tri-City Meals On Wheels has never stopped serving those in need. Even through the pandemic our clients receive meals prepared daily by one paid employee and approximately 125 volunteers.
Monday thru Friday, volunteers, and our kitchen coordinator prepare home-cooked meals, package and pack the meals for the volunteer drivers and runners to deliver to our clients. Currently, we are averaging two hundred and five (205) meals per day. Each meal consists of a protein, starch, and a vegetable along with bread, fruit, pudding or yogurt and dessert. All for $4.50/meal
We serve the Greensburg area (including South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg, West Point area, Fort Allen area), Jeannette, Penn, Manor, Harrison City areas and Senior living complexes in all areas. These areas are divided into fourteen (14) different routes. Each day, regardless of the weather, 14 teams deliver to those in need. Clients and their relatives have remarked about the delicious meals prepared and the kindness and care shared by those who deliver. We do our best. Our clients are especially important to us and are treated with care and respect.
In serving those in need. Not only the elderly, but we also serve those who for whatever reason are not able to safely provide themselves with a meal. Our clients are not only our clients but part of the Tri-City family. For some of our clients our volunteers are the only people with whom they have contact daily. Each volunteer cares deeply about those they serve. Because of this, volunteers and clients have become friends with the clients looking forward to their visits. Our volunteers check on their clients and if one is in need - moving a chair, getting their meal open, finding their glasses, calling for medical assistance - whatever the need our volunteers do their best to help. Each route has a list of people to call in case of an emergency or make a call to the kitchen for aid and relay the need. In some cases, these acts have been lifesaving.
Clients and family praise us not only for the wonderful food that is served but also for the caring, loving, and respectful way we provide our service to the community.
