Ruth's Refuge

Refugees and asylum seekers arrive in New York City with rich and varied life experiences but few tangible assets. Many recently settled families are unable to furnish their homes, often sleeping on the floor as they work to pay off debts, find jobs, and otherwise struggle to make their way in an unfamiliar city. Our goal at Ruth's Refuge, in partnership with other local resettlement agencies, is to welcome these families by providing them with apartment furnishings and other home essentials. Our volunteers donate furniture, load moving trucks, and assemble furniture. Financial donations make it possible for us to buy beds, linens, and kitchen supplies for families of all sizes.

The biblical heroine Ruth courageously uprooted herself from her native land, famously saying to her widowed mother-in-law Naomi, who had also just lost two sons, including Ruth's husband: "Wither thou goest, I will go." In the new land, with the help of Boaz, Ruth found refuge, a new family, and a new people.

Who We Are

Ruth’s Refuge is the only organization dedicated to providing home furnishings and other essentials to refugees, asylees and asylum seekers in New York City.
Ruth’s Refuge seeks to enable refugees, asylees and asylum seekers to gain independence and self-sufficiency as they establish new lives in the United States. Many individuals and families have suffered extensive trauma and enter the United States with little or no financial or communal support. Our goal is to alleviate some of the intense financial and emotional stressors included in obtaining employment, basic services, and community by ensuring that people do not need to worry about paying for and obtaining furnishings and other items needed for maintaining a home.
