The Aster Initiative emerged in 2018 as the charitable extension of The Katmint, a well-established early childhood learning center in Brooklyn. Originally known as The Katmint Learning Initiative, Aster was created to expand the reach of community-centered programming beyond the classroom—offering after-school care, scholarships, family support services, and wellness programming to meet the broader needs of Central Brooklyn residents.
Following a comprehensive needs-based assessment, the organization was restructured and rebranded in 2023 as The Aster Initiative, reflecting its purpose as a foundational “bedrock” for the community. Today, Aster focuses on creating equitable access to education, wellness, and economic opportunity through partnerships with public schools, agencies, and local organizations. Its mission remains rooted in serving where it is most needed—supporting families, preserving culture, and ensuring that Brooklyn’s long-standing communities continue to thrive amid ongoing change.
