Women's Empowerment Coalition of NYC (WECNYC) started with a mission to support and uplift immigrant women, empowering them to overcome challenges like discrimination, economic instability, and lack of access to essential services. Founded by Somia Elrowmeim, WECNYC has grown into a vital resource for women across New York City, providing direct services, education, job training, leadership development, and advocacy for legislative changes. Our

Story: Empowering Women, Leading ChangeFrom

the beginning, WECNYC focused on meeting the immediate needs of women in our community. We started with a food pantry to ensure no family went hungry, but we quickly expanded to offer much more. Our job training programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and mental health support services are helping women gain financial independence and stability. Our leadership development and civic engagement programs empower women to advocate for their rights and make lasting changes in their communities.Advo

YC has been an active force in advocacy, partnering with local leaders and organizations to address critical issues affecting women. We joined City Council Member Tiffany Cabán to campaign for ending gender-based violence, and we are proud to say that this bill has been successfully passed. Our collaboration with NYC on the Language Access Campaign has improved access to services for non-English speakers. We a

lso partnered with the Malikah Organization to introduce MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) data resources, successfully passing a bill that ensures the MENA community is adequately counted and represented. Additionally, we worked with the Malika Coalition and Council Member Shahana Hanif to advocate for MENA recognition as a minority community when applying for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) status, ensuring fair access to economic opportunities. Why

Coalition of NYC (WECNYC) began with a powerful vision: to create a community-based organization to uplift and empower women, especially immigrant women, in South Brooklyn. Founded by Somia Elrowmeim, WECNYC emerged as a response to the many challenges women in the community faced—discrimination, economic hardship, and lack of access to services. From its humble beginnings, WECNYC has grown into a transformative force, dedicated to providing direct services, education, job training, and leadership development. The Beginning: A Vision
