Hello!
I am a proud Board member of Area 1 Agency on Aging in Eureka, California. I am also the father of five cats and two dogs, but that's neither here nor there. Also, I like baseball.
Alright, knock it off - let's focus.
I'm attempting to raise money for a program at Area 1 called the Volunteer Driver Program. It's a program that helps provide free transportation for seniors to their medical appointments, to the grocery store, the pharmacy, and other essential errands. Many of these folks are homebound seniors who lack transportation.
In a rural area like Humboldt County, the Volunteer Driver Program is considered a critical service. Humboldt County is huge, over 4,000 square miles. We have very thin public transit services and many towns in the county are nowhere near a bus stop to take them to the nearest medical provider. This program is their only chance for safe transportation that is provided at no cost to local seniors. But providing fee‑free rides requires resources—insurance, training, coordination, and mileage reimbursement.
With government cuts to the social safety net and rising prices, the program cannot sustain demand for this service without community support. Donations and volunteers ensure that every essential trip can still happen, keeping older adults connected, healthy, and independent. Supporting this service strengthens the entire community by ensuring no one is isolated simply because of where they live.
Alright, so that's my pitch for donations! I'd be grateful for a donation of any amount. If I sent you the link to this donation page, you probably owe me twenty bucks anyway, so let's just send that to the seniors instead.
