$5,000 goal

Our partner communities in rural northern Ghana are facing rapidly intensifying food shortages which are unfortunately predicted to worsen throughout the year.

How you can help

We are trying to raise at least $5,000 by May 30 for the initial steps of this response. A generous donor has provided a $1,000 matching fund for any gift made by May 30th.

Donation impacts

  • $20 provides a child with a month of school lunches made from corn, peanuts, and cooking oil.
  • $50 purchases a 50kg bag of rice
  • $100 makes 250 peanut butter sandwiches for children, ages 10 to 15, in our Youth Education Program, so they can continue going to school.
  • $500 feeds a kindergarten class for a month

Why we are concerned
Global conflict is disrupting fuel and fertilizer supplies. At the same time, global aid for food and health has experienced large funding and staff cuts. Families face rising temperatures and erratic rainfall with long droughts, severe storms, and soil erosion.

Our partner communities, who live in extreme poverty (under $2 per day), are among the most vulnerable to these global issues. Their food security depends on both fuel to transport food from coastal regions and fertilizer to grow crops. Food prices are rising rapidly and there is no fertilizer available to purchase for the growing season which begins in mid-May.

For young children, this can mean delayed growth, difficulty learning, and increased vulnerability to other health challenges like malaria and waterborne illnesses. The photos our partners are sharing tragically show children suffering from significant malnutrition.

What we hope to do to improve the situation

  • We purchased 3,000 pounds of rice to provide school lunches for the rest of the school year (through July).
  • We would like to launch a lunch program in a rural village where there is no school to provide nutrition for children ages two to ten.
  • Our partners are exploring serving lunch during the upcoming August school break and distributing food to mothers of children under age five.

Engage Globally is not typically an emergency response organization. Our focus is long-term, community-led sustainable development. However, food insecurity can quickly reverse progress in education, health, and economic stability. This is a moment where early investment can make a meaningful difference, allowing us to act quickly, build reserves, stabilize food access, reach the most vulnerable, and help minimize the severity of fertilizer shortages for the upcoming farming season.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss this urgent effort, and our ongoing food security programs. Please contact us anytime at engage@engageglobally.org.
