Thanda is a non-profit organization based in Mtwalume, South Africa that provides educational and life skills programmes to empower people to create positive change. At Thanda, we have a dedicated programme to develop children’s literacy, not only the ability to read from an academic stance but so that children can learn to love reading, identify with characters and become lifelong learners. This year, Thanda20 is focussed on raising funds for early literacy at Thanda, and you can have a part in the story of children's literacy at Thanda in South Africa.
Why early literacy? Because every child deserves the opportunity to read. When a child opens a book, it opens their world by allowing them to identify with characters and imagine a different place. This enables them to develop empathy, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Reading is an essential building block for all other areas of learning, but an opportunity many children don’t have. In our community in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, most homes don't have any books. We are changing that through our fun & engaging Siyazazi After-school Programme, Hambanolwazi Library (Mobile Library), and Love Learning programme in schools, where reading becomes exciting and stories are used as the theme to teach many other things. Does it make a difference? In 2018 we recorded a 56% improvement in literacy, and so far this year, children have checked out 4307 books from our library!
By participating in Thanda 20, you will play an important part in ensuring that children growing up in rural South Africa develop a love for reading and become curious, lifelong learners who contribute positively to the world around them. Please donate to give these children an opportunity to delve into stories and increase their literacy. Thank you!
