Those who care for our COVID 19 positive grand-parents, and parents have largely been ignored. Most of us are sheltering in place and practicing social distancing in an attempt to stay safe. Our Healthcare Heroes leave their safe havens every day to treat positive people in need and knowingly put themselves at risk to ensure that 1.3 Million Americans receive medical care, medication, toileting, food, are fed, turned and repositioned, assisted with movement, bathed, can maintain contact with their loved ones, and receive compassionate and professional skilled nursing care. Due to sustained and close contact, aides and nurses are at high risk.

Our Heroes work tirelessly to help prevent further spread of the virus by vigilantly practicing infection prevention protocols, constantly cleaning and sterilizing surfaces, equipment and themselves—attempting to isolate residents, some of which are non-compliant or cannot understand. Common areas and dining rooms, field trips and family visits have all been suspended or restricted putting more responsibility on the shoulders of our Heroes.

Every day, Heroes are concerned whether there will be enough personal protective equipment for them to stay safe as there is an international shortage. Many are buying supplies and making their own equipment. They have to vigilantly clean their homes and themselves with EPA approved cleaners without regard to cost or shortages hoping they will not transmit the virus to others. With schools and daycare centers closed, they have to find a way to care for their children while they are away. They also have all the same difficulties we have obtaining reasonably priced food, goods and services and avoiding price gougers, often with much less time. And should they get ill, our heroes know that the expansion of the Family Leave Act does not apply to healthcare workers as they were excluded from the program—nor will they receive the extra $600 bonus given to those unemployed.

Without our support, the number of Heroes is decreasing. Yet the virus progression and a strained healthcare system demands that our Heroes care for more and more medically complex symptomatic-COVID 19 positive-residents. Heroes have, thus far, stepped-up at great personal sacrifice, in some cases giving their lives, and in all cases, taking the economic and emotional toll that accompany responsibility for over a million souls. We can say thank you and we should. We can push back when we hear people criticizing this heroic one percent and we should, but we ask you to please make a charitable contribution to the Healthcare Heroes in Action Fund so we can give our Heroes who seek assistance up to three hundred dollars per month more than they would have gotten without us (with employer match, this amount could be up to $600). Please help us to defray their increased costs and to say thank you in a strong unified voice.

With Matching funds, a contribution of $150 is enough to give a full thank you to one Hero this month. $1,500 is enough to give a full thank you to ten Heroes this month. $15,000 is enough to give a full thank you to one hundred Heroes this month. With your participation, we hope to thank more than 30,000 Heroes. Any amount is appreciated whether the same is smaller than $150 or larger than $15,000. The Heroes will know the numbers who expressed gratitude as well as feel the impact of the total raised. To make a contribution please click DONATE or you can send a check to Healthcare Heroes in Action Fund PO Box 588 Cross River NY 10518.
