Beat the Streets Providence is a local non-profit committed to inspiring urban youth for success in school and life through the vehicle of co-educational wrestling. We bring at-risk students into a positive after-school environment where we provide mandatory academic support, connect them with strong mentors, engage them in healthy physical activity while teaching them about nutrition and general health, and provide incentives for them to attend and succeed in school.
Every year BTS supporters run the Providence marathon to support our student athletes. However, this year due to COVID-19 and the National Quarantine, the Providence marathon was unfortunately cancelled! In solidarity with the spirit of the marathon and in support of our students, Executive Director Richard Muniz Brown '17, Founder Billy Watterson and Ian Butterbrolt are running the marathon anyways. Now we are asking our supporters to support them and our student athletes by donating and running with us!
"We are moving forward because we made a commitment to our students. All of our students are facing tough times right now with the transition to online schooling. I want to show the kids that no matter what is happening, no matter what is challenging you at this moment, you can finish what you've set out to do. Distance learning is still learning, our goal is still 26.2 miles, the only thing that's changed is the path we're taking to complete it." - Richard Muniz
The Virtual Marathon will take place on MAY 24th. Each runner will begin at 7 am their local time and submit photo updates as they complete their 26.2 mile journey!!
Please consider making a donation in support of their endeavor to bring awareness to our cause; and to help increase the impact of our organization on the youth of Providence.
Funds will be used to continue to support the hundreds of student athlete we work with as well as our staff during these difficult times. We remain committed to promoting physical fitness, healthy living, academic achievement, and character development for our youth. We have developed and are implementing engaging home-based programming for our students, families, and coaches. These include:
If you would like to participate in the Virtual Marathon please email Richard_Muniz@beatthestreetsprovidence.org
The more people involved the larger the impact we can have! Feel free to run a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, or the Full Marathon and share your journey.
