About Us
Founded in 1972, Chesapeake Humane Society is a non-profit organization that is managed by volunteers and funded by private donors - it does not receive government subsidies. The Society supports the homeless animals of Chesapeake in the following ways:
Our Mission
To break down barriers and build connections for pets and people through supportive services, innovative programs, collaborative partnerships, and thoughtful leadership.
Our Vision
To cultivate a humane community that fosters compassion and strengthens the human-animal bond.
Shelter Program
Our adoption program includes foster care and an on-site adoption center for cats, dogs, and small animals. We transfer our pets in from local municipal shelters to help with overcrowding and work to find them all loving forever homes.
Clinic Program
The Chesapeake Humane Society offers the following low-cost veterinary clinic services for cats and dogs:
Crisis Boarding Program
Here at Chesapeake Humane Society (CHS), we believe in preserving the human-animal bond and keeping people with their pets during times of crisis. Whether families are experiencing domestic abuse, a housing crisis, or a medical emergency, we are here to help. Our crisis boarding program provides temporary boarding and medical care for pets of families experiencing hardship. Our program is open to dogs, cats, and small animals. We also offer a pet food pantry program to families experiencing short- or long-term hardship.
Our programs aim to decrease the number of pets in shelters and increase the number of companion animals in loving, forever homes.
