Communities In Schools of New Mexico (CIS) works to make sure that no student falls through the cracks. Our full-time site coordinators work in schools to encourage students to stay in school and on a path to graduation. Site coordinators are mentors for students, allies for families, and serve as resource hubs for schools. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by Graduation Day on May 25, 2018, to show our students that we've got their backs.
Out of Santa Fe Public Schools’ 13,000 students, 75% live at or below the poverty line. In schools that CIS serves, the number increases to 96%. We work with students who come to school hungry, poorly clothed, homeless, or who have unstable homes. Poverty causes considerable trauma in any life, but for children and youth, that trauma can cause developmental delays and social/emotional scars that last forever. Our site coordinators work with students every day to motivate them to stay in school and graduate on to college or a career. Site coordinators help connect students and their families to resources like tutoring, mental health support, and even food and clothing. Site coordinators also go to great lengths to make sure their students are showing up to school -- from sending text messages early in the morning, to replacing car batteries, to picking students up at their homes. Our students know that there is someone at school waiting for them, excited to celebrate their successes and offer support during challenges.
Thank you for supporting Communities In Schools of New Mexico!
