Fieldwork has always been a core piece of Realms curriculum, and it has always required the support of our community to pull it off. Realms Middle and High Schools are public schools that are part of the Bend Lapine School District, and just like all other public schools in Central Oregon there's no tuition that students have to pay to attend our schools. The funding that the school district provides doesn't cover all of the costs associated with the hands on learning that we do at Realms, so we have to rely on the support of our community and people who believe in our educational mission to fund our experiential learning programs.
By the time this fundraiser ends, our middle and high schools will have more than 40 days in the field, just this trimester. That includes community building outings that students of all grades have participated in, interdisciplinary day trips to Tumalo Creek and Ryan Ranch where our 7th and 8th graders have applied science and math together and done authentic art and writing, multi-subject expedition related fieldwork with 9th and 10th graders where students learned about survival in real circumstances and explored power and privilege in their own community, and of course, intensives, where high school students get the opportunity to spend four full days immersing themselves in one topic.
