Choruses are forces for good. Through the joy of singing and the beauty of the music they present, they are an integral part of the arts community, bringing the healing power of music to all who hear them. Washington DC is not only the nation’s capital but also the “choral capital” of the country, boasting more than 100 professional, volunteer, and community choruses of all sizes.
But amid COVID-19, a chorus turns out to be a high-risk “super spreader” based on the breath it takes to sustain sound. Choral singing has been paused indefinitely, causing tremendous grief in our singing communities.
While we all struggled through the absence of regular rehearsals and performances, it occurred to me that singers can turn grief into joy and use this time of not singing to help those in the greatest need in our communities. So many are now suffering the economic fall-out of the pandemic. And waiting, as the lyric goes, is the hardest part. I floated the idea with colleagues, we formed Choruses for Care and Compassion to put this waiting to use, and the partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank came to be.
We have the opportunity to utilize this time well, and to put the energy and goodwill of our ensembles to the greatest use during this waiting. You might not hear us singing, but our voices have never been louder. Over 3,300 singers and 36 choirs have already joined this undertaking, and are we are going to put our collective energy to good use. Please, join us!
