Iceland Ice Skating Rink opened in 1940 and provided family fun to generations of Sacramentans for close to 70 years. In 2010, arson fire almost completely destroyed the rink. Thanks to the herculean efforts of dedicated volunteers, Iceland was cleared of tons of ash and debris, and it was discovered that the foundation of the rink was salvageable. Watch the documentary Frozen In Time, to learn more about Iceland's history.
In 2011, Sacramento Iceland, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established to operate the rink with the goal of promoting ice sports. Slowly and surely, Sacramento Iceland has worked tirelessly to rebuild and has operated seasonally – skating under the stars – for 9 seasons. The future is bright, and we are so excited that our longstanding hope for a roof will be realized, due to a 1.3 million grant from the City of Sacramento.
Sacramento Iceland has a significant amount of money to raise (phase 1 estimated at $100,000) to ready the rink for the new roof and year-round operation. We need to replace our bleachers, add seating, add and replace rubber matting, convert the Zamboni from propane to electric, install the donated solar array, and . Ultimately the nonprofit will need to replace the chillers (current system has been temporarily donated) and Zamboni, to make it possible to continue successful operation (phase 2 fundraise estimated at $200,000). This is a daunting task for such a small organization.
As one of over 600 nonprofit participants in Sacramento Region Community Foundation's Big Day of Giving, we've seen just how hard each nonprofit organization works to raise funds for causes near and dear to their hearts. We'd like to give back by sharing Iceland with you.
