Theatre of the Oppressed NYC partners with communities confronting systemic oppression to inspire transformative action through theatre!

What does this look like? We use the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology to create original plays based on actors’ own lived experiences of oppression. Then, we present these plays to audiences that include activists, advocates, legislators, policy-makers, and other community members! At performances, audience members are invited on stage to improvise as one of the characters represented - collectively imagining creative change.

Our partners around the city include The Ali Forney Center, Housing Works, Breaking Ground, the Red Hook Community Justice Center, LaGuardia Community College, and The Fortune Society, amongst others! We also run two Rapid Response Troupes, who rehearse a repertoire of plays in Spanish and English, which they are prepared to perform on short notice at advocacy events around the city. Our advocacy partners - whose campaigns we support through creative action - include the Dignity in Schools campaign, Communities United for Police Reform, Democracy Beyond Elections, and the Art, Justice, and Safety Coalition.

Every actor in our Forum Theatre Troupes is paid, and all of our performances are free! Over 9 years, TONYC has developed over 100 original plays, presented more than 325 free performances, and partnered with over 25 institutions. Over 825 actors have been guided through the production of plays addressing the systems of oppression that directly impact their lives.

By donating to TONYC today, you will support communities confronting systemic oppression in using creativity to inspire social and legislative change! Your tax deductible donation will play an important part in our programs and operations - helping to make our practice possible.
