Every summer, Success in Challenges Inc. (SIC) hosts the SIC & Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Long Beach Freedom School a life-changing, literacy-based enrichment program that uplifts and empowers youth through culturally affirming curriculum, mentorship, and community support.

For 20 years, this program has helped hundreds of students in Long Beach and surrounding communities discover the joy of reading, the power of their voice, and the value of their future. 

Through dynamic books, inspiring guest speakers, community service projects, and an environment filled with love and encouragement, our scholars don’t just grow academically—they grow in confidence, purpose, and hope.

But none of this happens without the support of generous donors like you.

This year, our Annual Spring Gala is raising funds to sponsor the 2025 Freedom School and ensure we have the resources to provide:

• Culturally relevant books for every student to build their home libraies
• Nutritous meals and snacks during the six week program
• Field trips & enrichment activities that bring learning to life
• Job opportunities for passionate college-aged mentors who serve as role models
• Supplies, technology, and classroom materials to create a vibrant learning space.
