Day 1 -- Why We Ride: Take a Bike Ride and Remember Loved Ones

Update posted 5 years ago

Bob Zeeb

More than 10 years ago, when LivableStreets had barely scraped together enough money to hire our first employee, members of the Zeeb family reached out and asked if we'd like to participate in a memorial bike ride they were organizing to celebrate the life of Bob Zeeb.

Bob Zeeb was a retired educational administrator for the Newton Schools, a coordinator of adult education for the First Unitarian Society of Newton, an avid environmentalist, social justice activist, gardener, and cyclist.

Bob regularly cycled 50 miles a day and hoped to make a cross-country trip the summer of 2011. His life was tragically cut short on November 10, 2009, as the result of a bicycle crash due to unsafe road conditions.

LivableStreets is so honored that the Zeeb family have chosen to honor Bob's legacy year after year by helping us organize a ride, now Tour de Streets, and by fundraising to support our critical work to make streets safer for everyone. Today Tour de Streets is our largest annual event and our most important fundraiser.

We're kicking off our 15 day challenge where we started - with a ride.

To Participate:

  1. Check out the original ride for Bob Zeeb here
  2. Participate in Bikes Not Bombs annual ride-a-thon!
  3. Go on your own favorite ride and share the route or a picture from your ride on social media.
  4. Can’t ride? Share a picture or story from a bike ride you’ve taken previously.
  5. Share your dream bike trip: if you could bike anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

How do I get credit for participating?

Follow the instructions in each activity and share your participation with us on social media! Tag us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram and use the hashtags #TourDeStreets2020 and/or #TourYourStreets to enter in your submission for points. If you don’t have social media, you can also email your submissions to TourDeStreets@livablestreets.info. You will receive 1 point for each activity you participate in, and participation in certain activities is eligible for prizes (ex. street haiku contest).

This year is LivableStreets’ 15th birthday! We’d love to be celebrating with you at our biggest party of the year, Tour de Streets, but that’s not what 2020 has in store for us.

Tour de Streets is still happening; it’s just going to take place in your home, your backyard, and -- most importantly -- on your streets.

To celebrate our 15th anniversary, we are launching a 15-day Tour Your Streets Campaign. This will be an opportunity to celebrate LivableStreets’ accomplishments over the last 15 years, and to ensure we have the resources to fund the next 15 years of LivableStreets advocacy.

Each day of our 15-day campaign, we’ll share a new activity with you. Every time you join in the fun, share with us on social media and invite others to join - it’s that simple!

This is a fundraiser too, so we ask that you join the event by making a personally meaningful donation, and encourage others in your community to donate and join the fun. Anyone can participate, but those who donate or fundraise will be eligible for additional activities and prizes.

How to participate:

  1. Start fundraising and create your own fundraising page or team!
  2. Once you’ve joined the Tour de Streets campaign, you’ll receive daily activity emails starting on September 15th through September 30th!
  3. Share your activities on your fundraising page and on social media -- be sure to tag us and use #TourdeStreets2020 and #TourYourStreets to be eligible for prizes! You can also email your submissions to TourdeStreets@livablestreets.info.
  4. Join us for the closing celebration on September 30th. We’ll be giving out awards, as well as honoring all the support we’ve had for the past 15 years.
