About the Race
The Grassroot Project (TGP) is a non-profit health promotion organization that recruits and trains all-star NCAA student-athletes to serve as volunteer health educators in DC middle schools. TGP’s corps of college athlete volunteers deliver a three-year, 30-hour movement-based health education curriculum that covers the topics of nutritional health, mental health, and sexual health in DC’s highest-need middle schools. To date, The Grassroot Project has mobilized more than 1,500 NCAA Division I athletes from five universities to provide more than 60,000 hours of free health education programs for thousands of DC teenagers. The Grassroot Project’s programs have been recognized as an innovative and effective method for promoting health equity and inspiring teenagers to live healthy lives. The organization’s work has been recognized with local, national, and international honors from the Clinton Global Initiative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Economic Forum.
Join “Team Grassroots”!
The Grassroot Project is an official charity partner of the 2020 Marine Corps Marathon (also called “The People’s Marathon”) and the Marine Corps 10k, set to take place on Sunday, October 25. We are mobilizing a team of runners to raise awareness and funds to support our health promotion work in the nation’s capital. We would love to have you join us!
What it Takes to Run The People’s Marathon on Team Grassroots
Each year, our team includes runners with a full range of experience--from first-time marathoners to seasoned runners who are looking to qualify for the Boston Marathon. This year, we are also lucky to be able to offer race slots for the Marine Corps 10k race, which is a much shorter option for beginners. No matter where you fit on this spectrum, we are glad to have you run with us. As soon as you sign up to run, we will send you a welcome email with a week-by-week training program and some fundraising tips. In order to run as part of our team, you must commit to raise a minimum of $500 by July 31, 2020 for the full marathon, or $350 for the 10k race. Your funds will support all fees associated with your race entry and team gear, and the remainder of your fundraising proceeds will support our health education programs for the 2020-2021 academic year. In 2020-2021, our goal is to reach 1,000 DC students with comprehensive health and wellness education, and we cannot do this without support from people like you! In the months leading up to race day, we will invite you to local training runs (for those located in the DC area), opportunities to see our health education programs in action, and a pre-race carb dinner on Saturday, October 24th. We will also send you training gear and a race-day running bib.
