Former MLB Player Calls for Community Support to Help At-Risk Youth in Long Beach - We talk about the dangerous situations that youth and their families face in Long Beach, including domestic violence, abuse, sexual exploitation, substance abuse, human trafficking, and gang violence. The speaker, a former MLB player and Long Beach business owner, is a board member of the 1736 Family Crisis Center and is asking for support for their Brighter Tomorrows campaign through Long Beach Gives. The donation will provide safe refuge, permanent housing connections, mental health care, and other life-saving services to help at-risk youth and their families thrive and build brighter tomorrows.
1736 Family Crisis Center (1736 FCC) began in 1972 as an emergency youth shelter for abused and runaway minors. For 24 years in Long Beach, we have provided shelter and comprehensive care for thousands of at-risk youths and their families.
Our agency assists youths of all ages facing homelessness, domestic violence, abuse, sexual exploitation, suicidal thoughts, mental health and substance use issues, and other devastating crisis situations. We target historically underserved populations, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color), LGBTQ+ persons, individuals with disabilities, and extremely low-income families.
To strengthen our lifesaving services for at-risk youth,
1736 FCC is excited to announce our Brighter Tomorrows Campaign
Donations made to this campaign through Long Beach Gives will ensure that more at-risk children, youth, and their families receive the critical care needed to end the cycle of homelessness and violence.
Your generous gift will help support vital youth services in Long Beach, such as
📞 24/7 Crisis Intervention through five bilingual emergency/suicide hotlines.

Meet two of our bright and dedicated clients
Maria* entered our program fearing for her life and seeking safe refuge from human trafficking. She was scared, homeless, and unsure of how to begin a path towards recovery. Using a trauma-informed approach, a case manager quickly met with Maria and assessed her basic and long-term needs, including housing, academic and employment support, counseling, and legal aid. A therapist also evaluated Maria’s mental health barriers. Determined to regain stability, Maria consistently met with program staff, engaging in educational and therapeutic enrichment activities, including college and job counseling, resume and interviewing workshops, and individual and group therapy. She also accessed our housing and legal services. In addition, staff helped Maria acquire a personal laptop for schoolwork. Our program and Maria’s dedication helped her to graduate, secure employment, achieve permanent housing, and live a stable and healthy life.
Andrew* entered our program with a history of truancies and petty theft. He also struggled with maintaining healthy relationships. A case manager and therapist worked with Andrew, providing individualized supportive services and enrichment activities, such as group therapy, anger management and relationship-building workshops, job preparation, and educational support. By collaborating with staff and peers, Andrew improved his communication and life skills. He also learned about accountability. Our staff’s ability to establish meaningful connections through regular check-ins helped Andrew to regain trust in adults. Andrew recently contacted the agency to share that he is doing well and attending school. He expressed a great appreciation for our staff and program.
