This Giving Tuesday, the Choice is Yours

A History of Giving Back
For ten years 826NYC has sparked students’ imaginations with inventive writing and publishing projects. Our programs are rooted in the simple idea that celebrating creativity is key to engaging youth. As public schools continue to cut back or eliminate arts programs while dropout rates climb, our model offers a sustainable way to assist under-resourced young people in the nation’s largest school district. 826NYC’S staff is supported by over 250 active volunteers. Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Last year, we served over 2,300 students.

Tailored Programs for Every Student
Our trained tutors deliver free, engaging creative writing programming with a focus on publishing all of our students’ work in bound books. Every year, we provide nearly 800 hours of after-school tutoring to 75 registered students ages 6-18. During after-school tutoring, students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with tutors on their homework as well as develop narratives and stories following daily writing prompts. This year, our students published their work in four bound chapbooks and read their work for friends and family at the book release parties.

As it is not feasible for all students to come to us, we also provide in-schools programming upon a teacher’s request. The pinnacle of our in-schools program is our Young Authors Publishing Project. The Young Authors Publishing Project is conducted with one educator across a grade level of classes and serves an average of 100 students per semester. Our Director of Education and a team of trained volunteers spend up to two days per week with each class during in-school time as they complete their curriculum and write and edit their pieces. Throughout the program students are challenged to not just express themselves in words but to engage in a rigorous revision process.

In addition to our After-School Tutoring and Writing and In-Schools programs, we also offer a variety of evening and weekend writing-themed workshops, field trips for New York City public school classes three times per week, and a college readiness program during which we help high school students draft their college entrance essays.

How You Can Help
This holiday season, we urge you to support 826NYC's Board and Advisory Board members as they raise money for our free programs during Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday, held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, began two years ago and has since become a global movement of generosity. By participating in Giving Tuesday, you will join thousands worldwide in this holiday tradition and support 826NYC’s programming as we move into our 11th year of serving New York City students and teachers.

This Giving Tuesday, consider joining the 826NYC membership program, the League of SuperHumans. Each level comes with unique benefits and 100% of your membership donation will go towards supporting 826NYC programs. You can learn more about the membership levels at 826nyc.org/donate-us/. No matter how much you give, you are giving directly to our students who enter the secret library to become learners, authors, and superheroes.
