Athens Soup Kitchen grew out of a desire to feed hungry people. A group of people at Eastern Hills Church of Christ first started serving the hungry by taking meals out to people in need. A group from that church began serving a meal to the community once a month and called it Meals of Kindness. Soon other churches and organizations in the community saw what EHCC was doing and joined in to help serve this once a month meal. Knowing that a once a month meal was not providing what was really needed, Mr. James Passmore and his wife Linda, had the dream and vision to open a soup kitchen. This dream was realized after purchase and preparation of the building and much hard work by a lot of volunteers. Athens Soup Kitchen began operation in March 2014 serving a meal of soup, cornbread, sandwich, and dessert one day a week. We served 6 people on the first day and after the first year we started serving 2 days a week. Currently, we are serving 150-200 people twice a week. There are many churches, organizations, and individual volunteers who give of their time and financial assistance in order to make this ministry successful. We operate solely on donations and grant money and all donated money is used for the operation of the soup kitchen and upkeep of the building. March, 2019 marked our 5 year anniversary at ASK.
