Abode Contemplative Care for the Dying

A nonprofit organization

ABODE is more than a house — it’s a home filled with love, dignity, and compassion. Over the past 10 years, hundreds of families have walked through these doors and found peace in some of life’s most tender moments.

Take Maria, for example. Maria came to ABODE in her final weeks after a long illness. Her family was exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure how to say goodbye. At ABODE, they found quiet moments of laughter in the kitchen, hands to hold during difficult nights, and a loving community that cared for Maria as if she were their own. Maria’s daughter later shared, “ABODE gave us the gift of being a family again, not just caregivers. I’ll carry that love with me forever.”

In addition to caring for Guests like Maria in our home, we also provide remote resources — guidance, education, and compassionate support that extend far beyond our walls. Through our Doula Resource Program, we connect trained end-of-life doulas with individuals and families, offering comfort, presence, and understanding wherever they may be. Whether someone is here with us in person or supported from afar, our mission remains the same: to ensure no one faces the end of life alone.

💜 This Big Give, your gift makes stories like Maria’s possible. Your support covers the cost of care — nearly $500 each day — so families can focus on love, not bills.

Who We Are

We are ABODE.

We specialize in caring for people in the last three months, weeks or even days of life who need a place to live or someone to care for them. Those who stay at ABODE are our Guests. And our services are even more critical now as the Coronavirus isolates San Antonio's citizens, leaving those at the end of life more alone than ever.

Though we work with most hospices in San Antonio, ABODE is not a hospice. Neither are we a nursing facility, assisted living or care center. We are a home, and our small, healthy staff serves as extended family for people who need us. We are taking extra precautions to follow universal best practices to help ensure our home is a safe haven for all of us, including the very limited number family members who enter during this time.

Contemplative care is at the heart of our work. We recognize dying as a spiritual process as well as a medical one.

While the cost of care is $275 a day, there is no cost for our Guests. Some can and do contribute. Others thankfully receive the gift we are honored to give.
