The Academy of the Holy Cross is one of the oldest schools in the Washington area.  Founded in 1868 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the school remained in the District until 1956 when relocated to Kensington - way out in the suburbs!  The campus is directly behind the Strathmore Arts Center.  In fact, at one time the Sisters of the Holy Cross lived in what is now the Strathmore Mansion.

The Academy continues to live the mission of being "dedicated to educating young women in a Christ-centered community which values diversity and is committed to developing women of courage, compassion and scholarship who responsibly embrace the social, spiritual and intellectual challenges of the world."

The "Ladies of the Academy" are dedicated and strong - academically (matriculating to the colleges of choice); artisically (regularly sold out performances including October performances of "Hairspray!"); athletically (4th successive" WCAC Field Hockey Championship on October 28!); as well as service oriented - within the local community and throughout the world.

However, during these uncertain economic times the Academy faces such challenges as increased requests for student tuition assistance; teacher recruitment and retention; technology upgrades; ongoing building & grounds maintenance and improvements.

As an independent school and non-profit organization, we depend on the generosity of the greater community to continue our good work and are truly grateful for the support of individuals, businesses, and other organizations to help keep us strong!

Thank you!
