Our purpose is to disrupt the cycle of thousands of years of poverty in this very rural, economically undeveloped area by providing orphans and destitute children with the care and education that will equip them for productive lives while nurturing the integrity and responsibility of model citizens.

Achungo has developed and supports the operations of a primary school and children's center in rural southwest Kenya with an all-Kenyan staff.  They provide food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and schooling for our 270 orphans and destitute. We also provide scholarships to all our graduates who qualify to attend secondary schools.  We plan to support them through higher education and/or vocational training that will equip them to be able to support themselves.

One of our students, Steve Biko Ouma's parents died in a car accident when he was 5 and he moved in with his elderly grandmother and diabetic, disabled grandfather, who were barely surviving in their mud hut (no water or electricity).  When he came to Achungo in 2012, he was without shoes and it had been seven years since he’d been at school because he had to work to support the family. He quickly became one of the top 3 in his class and a leader at Achungo.  He graduated at the end of 2014, easily passing his high school entrance exam and we now support him with a scholarship for high school as we look forward to the great things he will do with his life!
