This COVID-19 crisis has once again demonstrated the harrowing realities of our current social and economic systems and the way it affects those that are extremely vulnerable. Through our work, we shift power into the hands of our women members and low-wage immigrant workers to build with AAPI and with BIPOC communities that share our vision of a just and equitable world.

Grassroots organizing is strengthened by grassroots fundraising, as we are focused on building people’s power. We hope you consider donating MONTHLY to Adhikaar to ensure that we have sufficient and flexible funding to ensure we can continue this important work.

ABOUT US:

Adhikaar (Nepali: rights) is the only immigrant women-of-color-led grassroots organization based in Woodside, New York providing essential services and mobilizing the Nepali-speaking community to fight for human rights and social justice for all. Since 2005, we are the country’s only worker and community center dedicated to the Nepali-speaking community—an underserved, undercounted, and underfunded community—and advance workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, access to healthcare, and language justice. We embrace a holistic approach to movement building and recognize that addressing the material needs of our community is essential to building community-led movements for change.

We have an estimated 6,500 members and we serve about 10,000 Nepali-speaking immigrants every year. Our members are low-wage immigrant workers in informal sectors and work as domestic workers, nail salon workers, and in other informal sectors. They come from marginalized ethnic and caste groups in Nepal, India, Tibet, Bhutan, and other Nepali-speaking diasporas, and primarily speak Nepali along with their ethnic language, including Tibetan. A majority of our members are women-identifying, with limited literacy due to generational gender, economic, social, and caste-based discrimination. Most of our members are of mixed family status, on temporary visas, or undocumented.

Members often become familiar with Adhikaar through our workforce development trainings, English for Empowerment classes, or stop by our community center to seek healthcare, housing, protection from domestic violence, or support for their workers’ rights or immigration issues. Through these programs and services, we build trust and create pathways for our members to become leaders in their places of work, within their families, and in the broader community.
