AFAR was founded in April 1976 in the City of San Carlos and moved to the City of Redwood City in the fall of 2010. Special needs includes any condition which causes the person to be unable to participate in general recreation programs, be it a mental, emotional, psychological, coordination, physical or any other handicapping condition. AFAR collaborates with the City of Redwood City’s Accessible Recreation program to assist with programming and helps to develop materials to educate the community of its purpose, missiion and fundraising activities. AFAR also provides funding for capital improvements, and offers inclusive opportunities for all residents of San Mateo County Monday through Friday afternoons and Thursday evenings, the Special Needs Afternoon Program (SNAP) offers recreation services for participants with disabilities. The SNAP program encourages participants to live a healthy lifestyle offering peer interactions and community outings all in a safe and caring environment. The caring staff believes in a well-balanced curriculum, which consists of fitness, nutrition, cooking, literacy and community excursions. SNAP is a unique community-based, after-noon recreation program specifically designed for participants with special needs.
