For the past 30 years, the African American Cultural Society, Inc. (AACA) has been a significant provider of arts, culture and history in Flagler County and surrounding communities.  At the core of our mission, we are committed to improving relations between all people by promoting a greater understanding of people of African descent through the programs we provide, and by communicating truths about our shared histories.

Through our programs, a diverse group of people (youth, seniors and adults; the underprivileged, underrepresented, disabled, and people who do not have access for one reason or another to the programs we provide, as well as the varied cultural groups within our community) have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities and social interactions for their mutual enjoyment. Interacting within the diverse environment that we provide expands our community’s knowledge of the diversity in human cultures and helps us collectively and individually to understand what binds us together and to appreciate what differentiates us from one another.  We bridge a gap between an urban community nestled within a mostly rural county.  We are home to a diverse group of people of varied ethnic backgrounds who are connected through our African ancestry and American citizenship.

The AACS Cultural Center and Museum serves as a venue and resource to research, explore, educate and learn about the rich culture and experiences of people of African descent through exhibitions, programs and events.  AACS has a permanent museum collection received through donation and acquisition as well as ongoing art, sculpture and traveling humanities exhibits in our Founders Gallery (which accommodates programs and exhibits), and library resources (artifacts, historic books, music, film, archival documents and tapes) which are maintained in their Robert and Irma Brooks Resource Center.

The AACS also offers office, conference and event rental space to the community and other organizations, along with community services via special and recurring programming. Our Executive Board (responsible for operations), Board of Directors (governing body), Committees (standing/ad hoc) and volunteers (membership/community), plan and fulfill our vision by generously donating thousands of hours annually. A most notable achievement is AACS’ role in working with the state school board to establish an African American studies course in Florida high schools statewide, now worth 1.0 credit.

We are delighted to be a participant in Giving Tuesday as it is providing the opportunity to support vital programs for our youth, to maintain our facility, to recognize and support 30-years of service to the community and to continue with our annual programs, exhibitions, services and operations.  The pandemic has served a blow to the continuation of many non-profit charitable organizations that support or communities.  Programs such as this are bringing our communities back to life, by fulfilling important needs.
