The Afterschool Alliance is the national voice of afterschool and the main organizing body of the afterschool movement.  With founding support from and an ongoing partnership with the Mott Foundation, it has become the go-to resource for opinion leaders and the media on afterschool issues, and provides various supports to all levels of the field: from national allies to state leaders to local afterschool programs.  To advance quality afterschool programming, the Afterschool Alliance works to build:

  • At the National Level: A strong, broad, diverse coalition of organizations and individuals to champion afterschool for all.
  • At the State Level: Capable, influential networks to push for expansion and support of quality afterschool.
  • At the Community Level: An active, diverse, confident field of local programs and providers adept at building partnerships and accessing resources.
  • Public Support: An environment where every parent and community should expect and demand quality, affordable afterschool programs.

Nationally, the Afterschool Alliance represents the afterschool movement in debate and policy developments on a broad set of issues such as: student learning, education and health; supports for children, families and communities; science and technology; future workforce development; secondary school reform; the arts and creativity; and college access.  It leads education and outreach efforts on Capitol Hill and with the White House and other agencies by building coalitions; sharing goals; crafting, testing and honing messages; and engaging field leaders, stakeholders and supporters nationally to advance afterschool.  Through the media and other communications efforts, it informs public debate and impacts public opinion in support of afterschool.

At the state and local levels, the Afterschool Alliance supports the development of a unified, active field.  Its network includes more than 26,000 afterschool program partners and its publications reach more than 65,000 advocates and stakeholders every month.  To support local afterschool programs, the Afterschool Alliance provides: communications, media and advocacy training; support and tools; funding resources and advice; and opportunities for grassroots advocates to become involved in the national afterschool movement and to showcase their work on a national platform.

The Afterschool Alliance is also committed to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning.  Afterschool programs are complementary partners in the STEM education effort and offer hands-on projects and programs to excite a diverse group of children and youth about STEM topics and careers.
