The Bright Side Family

The Bright Side Family is a non-profit organization that helps older adults in Bergen County access affordable care and services by providing high-quality assisted living, subsidized housing, in-home supportive care, and comprehensive quality of life programming so they can age with choice, dignity, safety, comfort, and community. We believe that having a safe and comfortable home environment is a fundamental right, that income should not dictate access to supportive care, health care, or social services, and that community is created by honoring one another’s individuality, dignity, privacy, and autonomy. 

Age-Friendly Teaneck is the Bright Side Family's local community initiative, whose mission is to make the community more livable for people of all ages, while also increasing awareness of the needs of the Township’s rapidly growing older population. To achieve that ideal, a community needs to be safe, secure, and free of physical and social barriers, with policies that promote affordable housing, reliable transportation, walkable streets, a supportive business climate, good healthcare, and opportunities to be engaged. Age-Friendly Teaneck has helped the Township become a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, which is an affiliate of the World Health Organization's Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program.

Goals

For many older residents in Teaneck where many put down roots long ago, the pandemic has increased the challenges they face to affordably and comfortably age in this community. We are working with partner organizations in the region – and with Teaneck’s government, civic and faith leaders – to find ways to overcome the housing, transportation, and social-support barriers that can make a community less livable for people of all ages. In what will be our seventh year, we plan to bring some of our programs beyond the borders of Teaneck and into the community of Bergen County, either by expanding our reach or through collaboration as a member of Age-Friendly North Jersey. We also are seeking to develop new outreach and community education programs, building on our mission of ensuring older residents are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to age in independence, safety and dignity. With your support, we can meet these goals!
