What makes Alabama unique?  Is it the people, the food, the buildings, the crops, the languages, the music, the clothes, the baskets, the quilts, or the ghost stories? Alabama is home to diverse cultures and ways of life that express our experiences, geography, resources, beliefs, values, aspirations, and artistic traditions.

For 40 years, the Alabama Folklife Association (AFA) has documented, preserved, and promoted the multicultural folkways of Alabama through research, education, and programming. AFA work includes exhibits, workshops, lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, publications, and performances that celebrate our collective folk heritage.

With your support we can:

  • Identify and document examples of Alabama’s evolving folk traditions through research, training, and archival preservation.
  • Inspire Alabamians to practice and preserve our  cultural and artistic heritage by sharing Alabama folklife in schools and communities.
  • Support local artists, small towns, museums, libraries, galleries, and homegrown businesses by enhancing arts-based community development.
