How do humans communicate their culture?

One night last summer, 100 educators experienced the wonder of the creative process as Sara Sanford guided dancers from Alabama Dance Theatre through choreographic problem-solving. With scarcely a moment to catch their breath, these same educators became creators in a drum circle led by teaching artist, John Scalici. Through the language of movement and the language of rhythm, these participants experienced the visceral power of art.

AIEA is a non-profit organization with the sole
mission to provide comprehensive arts education
professional development services to schools
throughout Alabama. Our philosophy is that all
children, not just the gifted and talented, benefit
from an intensive study of the arts and are entitled
to that opportunity. Comprehensive arts education
is not a curriculum but rather a method of teaching
and learning, focused on inquiry, problem-solving,
and critical thinking.

How does AIEA impact students and educators?

  • week-long, intensive SUMMER INSTITUTE
  • twice yearly INTEGRATED CURRICULUM DESIGN workshops
  • free, one-day SUPERSATURDAY workshops, geared to a specific discipline
  • site-based PROFESSIONAL LEARNING, tailored to address local school needs
  • K-12 TEACHING ARTIST RESIDENCIES
  • ongoing SITE VISITS that provide support to participants and allow AIEA staff to view the implementation of training
