The Alexandria Police Foundation (APF) is dedicated to providing resources to the Alexandria Police Department to foster morale, strengthen police-community relationships, and ensure the care and well-being of its active and retired K-9s.
Our FY 2026 goals and initiatives revolve around 3 main programs – COPS, Kids and K-9s. These include:
- We fund and support the Community Oriented Policing Section (COPS) in their programs and efforts to promote a partnership between the APD and the community, especially at-risk children and families. This historically has included funding for community events such as neighborhood clean-ups, sports events for at-risk children, Thanksgiving and Christmas programs, the Law Enforcement Youth Academy and neighborhood barbecues.
- Purchase medical insurance and food for 4 retired K-9 police dogs.
- Sponsor 40 disadvantaged Alexandria children to attend the Alexandria Police Youth Camp.
The Alexandria Police Foundation (APF) was founded in 2002 by Chief Charles Samarra and citizens who initiated, supported and funded programs to improve the performance and effectiveness of the Police Department. APF is dedicated to providing resources to the Alexandria Police Department to improve officer performance, morale, and effectiveness, and to ensure the care and well-being of its active and retired police dogs. The APF seeks donations and grants to build and strengthen police-community partnerships. Programs of the Foundation are focused on COPS (Community Oriented Policing), Kids and K9s. $45,000 has been donated since 2015 to the healthcare of retired canine.
In addition to our funding for K9 healthcare in retirement, APF also supports:
SUMMER YOUTH CAMP: APF supports and promotes a summer camp owned and operated by Alexandria Police Officers, located in Kilmarnock, VA. 174 children have received scholarships from APF totaling over $97,000.
HOLIDAY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: $17,000 has been donated by APF for Thanksgiving meals to families in need. During Christmas, children shop with a police officer for holiday gifts. APF has donated $29,000 to this program since 2014.
COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY: The Alexandria Community Police Academy provides an opportunity for local residents and visitors to learn various aspects of policing. This includes administrative philosophies, internal policies, and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services. Sessions are a combination of lectures and interactive activities. Class topics include patrol operations, gangs, crime prevention, crime scene investigations, criminal investigations, and more. 1,098 people have graduated from the Community Police Academy over 28 years.
OFFICER MORALE AND WELL-BEING: APF helped fund a new $50,000 Tactical Training Unit Outdoor Fitness facility for officers at Police Headquarters. The Alexandria Police Foundation provides tuition assistance for officers to continue their education at a university. $69,000 has been donated by APF to police officers for continuing education.
Your generous donation allows APD to continue these programs and many more!
