the alexis PROJECT is a non-profit organization devoted to carrying on the legacy of Alexis Calfee and Chris Oberg through education and community outreach about the dangers of drunk driving. We believe in providing readily available information on why driving drunk is a 100% preventable choice and what you can do to save a life.
On Friday September 9th, 2011 the lives of Alexis Calfee and Chris Oberg were abruptly ended. A drunk driver struck Chris' motorcycle while driving on the wrong side of the road, instantly killing the young couple outside of Emerson, Nebraska. This individual's actions were 100% preventable. The loss of these two inspiring young lives will be felt by countless people for years to come.
Alexis Victoria Calfee was born on October 6, 1992 to Todd and Jaimi Calfee. To say that Lexi had a zest for life is an understatement. Lexi was beautiful, caring and above all extremely humble. She was also smart, athletic, upbeat and funny. Most say it was her contagious smile and her infectious laugh that made her someone everyone gravitated toward. She was voted the Homecoming Queen, volleyball captain and she was the most valuable female track athlete her senior year in high school. In fact, she was competitive without losing any sense of sportsmanship- she actually encouraged others to beat her records in track and befriended members of opposing teams. Even as she headed to college at Wayne State, she regularly did volunteer work such as working for the Rimington Trophy Committee, a non-profit that does research for Cystic Fibrosis. Despite the long list of her lengthy accomplishments, her success never went to her head- she selflessly put the needs of others first and foremost. Lexi also loved her family and considered her parents and siblings, Drey and Moriah, some of her best friends. Lexi strived to make a difference in the world each day, even if it was by doing something as simple as getting a friend to laugh or making someone smile. In the short time that she was here, she truly made the world a better place. Though she may have passed on, her spirit remains n the hearts of those who knew and loved her dearly.
At the alexis PROJECT, we believe that designated drivers are heroes and should be treated as such. We believe that change starts at an individual level and that all it takes is for one person to make a good decision to potentially save their life or someone else's.
We provide education by telling Lexi and Chris' story to anyone willing to listen. We speak to any level, from small groups of teen agers to high school and college students to adults in business and those forced by the courts to listen. Lexi and Chris' tragic story has been shared as far away as New Jersey, to home, here in Lincoln countless times, to South Dakota and Iowa. It has been said by many, "hearing their story has changed my life." Many forced to hear their tragic story have said they will never drive drunk again.
Scholarships in Lexi and Chris' memories to those wanting to chase their dreams in college are awarded at Wayne State College and to a Palmyra High School graduate every year. In the near future a Lancaster County Scholarship will be awarded in Lexi's memory. We host a blood drive that gives back to the community, via Hometown Heros, Nebraska Community Blood Bank. A golf tournament every fall and a 18 and under girl's softball tournament hosted by the alexis PROJECT also help provide funding and educational out reach to the community.
So as the alexis PROJECT saying goes....take your turn, taP you're it! Be IT for the night, provide a safe ride home or the funding to educate others why they need to.
