You probably know somebody who is affected by mental illness.  1 in 4 adults experience a mental health problem in any given year and 1 in 17 adults live with a serious mental illness like depression, biploar disorder or schizophrenia. Many people with brain disorders have a neurological deficit called anosognosia which prevents them from having any insight into their own illness.  Our son was diagnosed in the fall of 2009 but refused treatment for many months.  We ultimately found him in New York City and were able to convince him to go to a hospital.  After three weeks in the hospital he finally began receiving a therapuetic dose of medicine and began his long journey of recovery.  Our family needed a better understanding of mental illness and a support system to weather the impact of our son's illness.  NAMI AA County was there for us and can be there for you and your loved one as well. We are participating in Anne Arundel County's Great Give Day.  Please help us offer education classess, support groups and advocacy for all those affected by mental illness.
